Monday Rundown: Uses Convicts For Power

By on July 2, 2012

[box_light] It’s Monday, and if you’re new to Quarterlife Man (welcome), you’re new to the Monday Rundown. The Monday Rundown is a compendium of  randomness compiled over the course of each week. Enjoy… [As always, if you've seen something crazy or have a suggestion, email us or tell us on Twitter (@QuarterlifeMan).] [/box_light] [divider]

Another great video… starring Baron Davis!

––All You Need is a Little Scum

Pond scum, that is. Scientists are saying that algae as a biofuel is a future fuel source.

[box_light]In the IEEE statement, he noted that “An acre of corn can be used to generate 300 gallons of ethanol per year, while an acre of algae can produce 6,000 to 10,000 gallons of light sweet crude oil annually.”[/box_light]

Can you imagine, an ethanol alternative that brings gas-prices back to relative nothingness? I can. (And I’ll be praying for it daily.)

More Future of Tech: Scientists develop a spray-on battery.

––Brazilian Prisoners Charging Batteries

Listen. If Brazil can use their prisoners to charge batteries via stationary bikes, why can’t we? The Santa Rita do Sapucai prison in Brazil is doing it and the response has been tremendous. For every 16 hours on a bike, a prisoners removes a day from their sentence. They currently have two bikes, but are looking at adding eight more. With all of the extra manpower, the total output would likely only power a single avenue–––but hey–––if you get enough prisoners and enough bikes, you could power the world. Future prisons would turn into the spin class from hell… and I’m okay with that.[divider]

––Happy Independence Day

Watch some July 4 fireworks fail videos on YouTube. We won’t embed because these videos contain the language you’d expect from a firework exploding in your hand, but check them out anyway (NSFW).
