Finding Your Refrigerator Friend

J Money’s [Ed. note: Yes. Thanks for using the nickname.] article from April regarding the circle of friends couldn’t have depicted my college years better.

I look back at some of the various of groups of friends I spent countless hours with and all the stupid things we did. It’s amazing how it is so easy to drift from friend to friend with no one holding us accountable.

A man once told me that no matter where you are in life, you need a refrigerator friend.

That friend that will walk in your house (without knocking), open up the refrigerator and grab some food (without asking), and sit down on the couch, striking up a conversation with no one thinking anything about it.

These are the type of friends that everyone needs to have, the people that will be there in the good times and bad. They are the friends that will challenge your actions and call you out on reckless behavior. It’s that one certain type of person that you can be genuine with and share your inner most fears about life, without worry about being judged.

I will wager that not too many people have those types of friends. It’s too difficult.

It’s easier to just drift from circle to circle without having to reveal too much of yourself. Our natural instincts are full of insecurity and fear, hoping no one will find out the real us.

I’ve had the blessing of having a handful of friends that I can call refrigerator friends… and they know me like no one else does. It’s not something that wasn’t formed easily or quickly, but through battles and wars that we fought in our lives together.

Who do you have in your life that is standing right beside you as you navigate through this crazy world?

It is an rare treasure to find that type of friend. If you have one, great. If not, I hope that you find one to lean on throughout this journey.
