What’s So Amazing About Now

I was on a walk with my brother recently. We looped around a park in Nashville with lush green grass and full maple trees as we talked about a common conversation of ours: life.
I’ve found that all good conversations contain one thing: a memorable takeaway.
Often times, we call up a friend hoping that their advice will somehow fix or change everything–––and it never does. ”If I could just tell you everything, you could tell me what to do, and I’ll feel better.”

Friends are not God.
They can’t fix the problem and they certainly can’t fix the root of our problems.
However, good conversation does have the capacity to impress us. And usually, we are impressed by a single idea, phrase, or concept. This was the case with my brother just a few days ago, when he said something to me… and I really heard it.
What did he say?

“My dream life would go like this…” And he started listing the things he loves the most, and the ideal scenario for his life. I simply asked, “What could you do to make your dream life happen?”
He answered, “It already is. I am living my dream life. With the exception of a few things that I am working on, the life I live now is the life I want to be living.”
Dang.

“See, Aliza, I don’t want you to be one of those people who talks about what they want to do. I want to write songs and play hockey, and commute from Nashville to LA for work. So, I’m doing it. You, for example, want to write, and you are. It’s not that hard, it’s just deciding to live your dream now.”
That was powerful. And profound. And also pretty simple to do.
It’s only in fairytales that dreams happen overnight. It takes hard work and persistence to grow dreams into success. And success isn’t necessarily the American version of the word. It’s what makes us come alive. It’s what daily fulfills, provides purpose, and makes us happy–––be it owning a company, or doing Crossfit everyday.
Live your dream now, as best you can with what you’ve got.
Be resourceful, be creative, and believe that you can… because I’ve learned (from experience) that time waits for no man.
Own that ticking clock.
